Where the case stands
Direct appeal argued April 17, 2025 before the Fourth District; decision under advisement. On June 27, 2026 the same court ordered resentencing for cooperating siblings Jake and Angela Wagner (premature sentencing), but George IV's separate conviction appeal remains undecided.
Background
One of four Wagner family members charged in the 2016 execution-style killings of eight members of the Rhoden family in Pike County, Ohio — among the worst mass killings in Ohio history. George IV was the only one to go to trial, was convicted on all counts in November 2022, and was sentenced to eight consecutive life terms without parole plus 121 years.

The arguments
Prosecution/State: George participated in a meticulously planned family plot, driven by a custody dispute, to murder the Rhodens in their sleep; brother Jake (an admitted shooter) and mother Angela testified against him under plea deals that took the death penalty off the table.
Defense: On appeal, counsel focused on the state's death-penalty plea deals with Jake and Angela — arguing the arrangement and related testimony tainted the trial — along with challenges to other-acts evidence, and asked for a new trial. At trial George testified he had no knowledge of the plot.
