Awaiting decisionUnited States v. Matar (federal sentencing)
Will Hadi Matar get life in prison at his federal terrorism sentencing?
Where the case stands
Fully tried — federal jury convicted on all counts after roughly two hours of deliberation.
Background
New Jersey man who stabbed author Salman Rushdie onstage at the Chautauqua Institution on Aug. 12, 2022, blinding him in one eye. Already serving 25 years on his New York state attempted-murder conviction.
Charges
- Convicted July 29, 2026 of attempting to provide material support to Hizbollah, a designated foreign terrorist organization
- Engaging in an act of terrorism transcending national boundaries
- Providing material support to terrorists
- Maximum penalty: life in prison
The arguments
Prosecution/State: A premeditated execution framed as jihad: months of electronic planning tracking Rushdie's appearances, messages invoking the 1989 fatwa (including "We need to kill him ASAP"), and photos/files showing support for Hezbollah, which endorsed the fatwa.
Defense: The government had no proof of what was in Matar's head — no real connection to or direction from Hezbollah; Matar did not testify.
The record
- Attack video. Courtroom video of the onstage stabbing was played for jurors, who watched as onlookers gasped (state trial).
- Electronic planning. Chats and device files showing months of planning and tracking of Rushdie's public appearances.
- Hezbollah material. Photos and computer files indicating support for Hezbollah and engagement with the fatwa.
The line-setting read at the time this market opened
Terrorism convictions with a life max and a swift all-counts verdict typically draw the top of the range; he is already serving 25 years in state prison. But the statutory scheme allows a term of years, and defense will argue duplication of the state sentence.
Awaiting decision — Judge Arcara's sentence on Nov. 3, 2026 — the only open question is life vs. a term of years. The ruling is posted here, and on the board, the moment it's confirmed by two or more independent news organizations.
